Several government services in Athens-Clarke County will adjust their schedules in observance of Veterans Day on Tuesday, November 11.

The Animal Shelter will be closed for the day, with regular hours resuming on Wednesday, November 12. Animal Services officers will not respond to non-emergency calls during the holiday, but emergency animal services can still be accessed by calling 911. “Emergency services – such as an animal bite, a seriously sick or injured animal, or an animal trapped inside a living space of a home – will be provided throughout the holiday by calling 911.” For further information, residents may contact the Animal Services Department at 706-613-3540 or visit www.accgov.com/animalservices.

Leisure Services parks will operate under reduced hours from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Veterans Day. All other department facilities—including Sandy Creek Nature Center, Lyndon House Arts Center, and community centers—will be closed. Normal operations for all parks and facilities resume the following day. Additional details are available through the Leisure Services Department at 706-613-3800 or www.accgov.com/leisure.

Solid Waste offices will not open on November 11. Residential garbage and recycling collection originally scheduled for Tuesday will take place on Wednesday; Wednesday collections move to Thursday; and Thursday collections shift to Friday. Monday pickups remain unchanged. Downtown district commercial and residential curbside, roll cart, and dumpster garbage and recycling services continue as regularly scheduled. Other commercial curbside services follow the same adjusted schedule as residential pickups.

Leaf and limb collection is suspended for the holiday. During the week of November 10, crews plan to finish work in Area E and begin in Area F; updates are posted at accgov.com/leaflimb. The Materials Recycling Facility remains open as usual on November 11, while both the Landfill and CHaRM facility are closed that day with normal hours resuming Wednesday. More information can be found at www.accgov.com/solidwaste or by calling 706-613-3501.

Transit bus service maintains its full-service schedule on Veterans Day, with the information window staffed as usual. However, Transit offices themselves are closed until Wednesday when standard hours resume (www.accgov.com/transit or call 706-613-3432).

The Mayor and Commission’s Work Session initially set for noon on November 11 at Dougherty Street Government Building has been rescheduled for noon on Wednesday, November 12 in the Commission Chamber at City Hall (301 College Avenue). Meeting agendas are posted online at www.accgov.com/agendas.

All general departmental administrative offices—including City Hall, Courthouse, Satula Avenue Building, and Dougherty Street Governmental Building—will also close for Veterans Day before returning to regular hours on Wednesday.
