Chronic absenteeism continues to challenge Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. The GaDOE has rolled out a statewide campaign featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness effort, and focused support for districts with the greatest need to help improve student attendance.

Georgia lawmakers passed legislation in 2025 that updates school attendance policies, prohibiting expulsions that are solely based on absenteeism. Additional regulations now require new reporting standards and accommodate alternative diploma programs.

By 2026, Georgia reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, which is better than the national ratio of 15:1.
