Reports show Jefferson Middle School reached a total enrollment of 1,005 students in the 2024-25 school year. African American students accounted for 7% of all students, making them the third-largest group among the enrolled population.
The school is part of Jefferson City School District, with the district headquarters based in Jefferson.
Within Jefferson City School District’s four schools, Jefferson High School registered the most African American students in the 2024-25 school year, totaling 134 students.
The Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report stated that more than 1.7 million students attended Georgia’s public schools. Most were in elementary grades with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by 388,733 students in middle schools (22.7%), and 539,092 in high schools (31.4%).
Chronic absenteeism continues to be a concern in Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, according to the Georgia Department of Education. To address the issue, GaDOE has started a statewide campaign with a real-time attendance dashboard, public outreach, and extra assistance for districts with the greatest need to improve regular attendance.
In 2025, Georgia legislators approved a law revising school attendance policies to prohibit expelling students solely for absenteeism. The updated law also introduces new requirements for reporting and connects with initiatives that support earning diplomas through alternative methods.
By 2026, Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio averaged about 14:1, outpacing the national average of 15:1.
