Statewide, enrollment in Georgia’s public schools surpassed 1.7 million, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 figures. Of this, elementary schools accounted for the majority with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by 388,733 students in middle schools (22.7%) and 539,092 students in high schools (31.4%).
Following the pandemic, chronic absenteeism remains widespread in Georgia with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. To address the problem, the GaDOE introduced several initiatives, such as a real-time attendance dashboard, an outreach campaign, and support measures for districts in need.
In 2025, a new Georgia law revised attendance statutes to prevent expulsion based solely on absences. The legislation expands reporting requirements and adds more graduation pathways for students through flexible programs.
By 2026, Georgia reached an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, outperforming the nationwide 15:1 figure.
